“We’ve been LACES users
for the past year and can’t say enough about the how responsive
the tech staff has been. They really “get” adult literacy,
and also know how to explain technical issues to non-techies.
They’ve been great about implementing all kinds of changes
to LACES based on our feedback and particular tracking and
reporting needs. Our funders are amazed at the kind of information
we have at our fingertips – because of LACES.”

David Miller
CEO/Founder
Prior to establishing LiteracyPro Systems in 1995, David
served as Founder and Executive Director of Project READ in
Redwood, California. While at the helm, this program won four
national awards for excellence and innovation, including a
US Department of Education-sponsored research study that selected
his program as “one of five exemplary literacy programs in
the United States.”
David also established one of California's first library/school
district partnerships that matched at-risk high school youth with
at-risk elementary school students. Still in operation, this program
has graduated more than 1,000 students with many of them going
on to college.
A fascination with software emerged as a direct result of David’s
quest for program management software for Project READ. After several
years of trying and working with numerous programmers, the software
that would launch LiteracyPro Systems was created.
David obtained his BS from UC Davis and his Masters
of Public Administration from Harvard University's Kennedy School
of Government.

Joel Abueg
Vice President of Engineering
Joel began his professional association with computers in the early 1980’s, programming arcade games and instructional software for clients such as AtariSoft, CBS Software, and Electronic Arts. Twenty years later, Joel serves as LiteracyPro Systems' Vice President of Engineering, following a journey that brings together a unique combination of skills, knowledge, and experience.
With initial interests in Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence, he wrote an English language parser and text-to-phoneme program that won recognition by the Association for Computing Machinery SIGArt at age 17. Later he conducted research in cognitive neurolinguistics, neural network modeling and massively parallel computing with the support of a W. M. Keck Foundation grant. As an instructor he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in cognitive psychology, research methods, and statistics, and he coauthored a text used for an undergraduate course in psycholinguistics. He also served as the coordinator of the mentor program under the auspices of the UCLA Academic Advancement Program, the largest and most successful program of its kind in the country. That involvement drew Joel into educational research, which resulted in additional graduate work at UCSB in educational psychology and literacy, as well as an analyst working with student data for UCLA. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from UCLA in Cognitive Science (AB), and Cognitive Psychology (MA, ABD-PhD).
Joel’s technical knowledge in computing, cognitive science, and education has proven instrumental in helping to achieve the goals of both LiteracyPro and its clients.
